DRESS CODE It has been observed in recent times that the way and manner some public servants dress to their places of work fall far below the acceptable dress code in the service, to the extent that public servants cannot differentiate between what is acceptable for work and social events. For example, the putting on of hats described as "Resource Control', "papa's cap" and others by some public servants which are best suited for social gatherings has become worrisome. 2. Again, it should be noted that the role expected of senior civil servant in correcting this ugly trend cannot be overemphasized. They should not only be exemplary in their dressing, but should be courageous enough to correct erring subordinates and apply sanctions when necessary. In addition to the above, its essential that I remind you of Public Service Rule No. 04314 which states inter-alia: "No officer shall appear in the office or anywhere in his official capacity dressed in a manner considered inappropriate or immodest" 3. It is in consideration of the above and without disregard to our peculiar cultures, that the following dressing modes have been approved as a minimum official dressing which is considered corporate and modest in official capacity. (A) MALE PUBLIC SERVANTS: (i) all officers on grade levels 13 and above should appear at work on in complete suit, (ii) all officers on salary grade levels 07 - 12 should appear as in (i) above or in a pair of trouser, shirt and tie except all administrative officers who should always be in sui. (iii) all officers on salary grade levels 01 - 06 should appear as in (i) or (ii) above except for uniform staff like messengers, drives, cleaners plant operators etc would should always be in their unforms and in the absence of the uniform, should put on trousers and shirt to work. (B) FEMALE PUBLIC SERVANTS. (i) all officers on grade levels 13 and above should appear at work on skirt suit or trouser suits only (no hats) (ii) all officers on salary grade levels 07 to 12 should appear either as in B(i) above or in free gowns below the knee with sleeves or skirt below the knee and blouse with sleeves(no spaghetti hand) (iii) all officers on grade levels 01 to 06 should appear in free gowns with sleeves or skirt and blouse as described in B(ii) above. 4. Above all the traditional wear permissible for men is a smart caftan and trouser with tradition cap to march, while female public servants are authorised to wear buba and wrapper or long skirt and blouse with sleeves which must be only on Fridays and if on other days, a special permission must be sort and obtained. 5. It should be emphasized that this circular letter is intended to elicit dressing discipline among public servants and to ensure that the dress codes are complied with. It therefore, behoves on all Heads of Departments to enforce the rule, and not to hesitate to send officers who are not properly dressed, home. 6. Kindly bring the contents of this circular to all concerned for compliance. please.
