Delta State Gov. Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan has called for the creation of a cooperative day in the state, saying that such a day should be marked with seminar and fanfare because cooperative bodies were important in the scheme of things.
Dr. Uduaghan who made the call at a meeting with Oshimili Multi Purpose Cooperative Union in Asaba said the state government would through cooperative societies open channel of investment for public officers especially in agriculture and commerce.
The governor said that his administration is set to empower cooperative bodies so that they could serve as palliative organs through which workers could stand on to cushion the effect of partial subsidy removal. And he called on the public officers in the state to take advantage of such opportunity because it will help them to depend less on their salaries and reduce some financial stress.
Dr. Uduaghan directed the State Head of Service to ensure the deduction from the salaries of civil servants, as these will help in assisting the stability of the cooperative societies in the state. He said that cooperative societies will be seen as a launching pad for diversification of investment and promised to put a proper structure in place in order to reposition cooperative societies in the state.
Earlier, the president of Asaba cooperative union Mr. Larry Onyechi thanked the governor for his concern saying that about 300 department cooperative societies already exist in the State.
