Culture & Tourism

The State Tourism sector has witnessed policy continuity in all democratic dispensations which the State has had so far. The Directorate of Culture and Tourism was created in the year 2001 to promote the culture and tourism potentials of the State. The basic thrust of this Directorate in the year 2003 was to sustain the development of this sector which started from 2001.

The aim was to package Delta State as a brand as well as to preserve and enhance Delta State’s unique heritage, natural landscape and biodiversity. It also explores areas by which it can partner with all stakeholders in the development of culture and tourism. 

In this regard, its responsibilities include the development and promotion of Arts and Crafts, Culture Antiquities. It is also charged with the responsibilities of decorating cities and towns, register, classify and grade all hospitality and tourism enterprises.

The Directorate also assists in the development of museums and historic sites, parks, game reserves, beaches and holiday resorts etc.

The Directorate has made remarkable achievement over the years since its creation in 2001 thus:

  1. Publication of the Delta Heritage magazine 
  2. Delta Talent Quest
  3. Procurement of internet services
  4. Documentation of all Cultural and Arts Rites
  5. Promotion of Arts and Crafts
  6. Towns and cities beautification
  7. Entertainment for development

These achievements were attainable with the support of its two Parastatals: Delta Tourism Board and the Delta State Council for Arts and Culture. From the year 2001 when the Directorate was created till date, under two civilian administrations, the Directorate has developed some remarkable tourist sites in the State:-

  1. Nana Living History Museum, Koko
  2. Obi Palace, Idumuje-Ugboko
  3. Demos Nwoko Villa, Idumuje-Ugboko
  4. Mongo Park House (the kallen), Asaba
  5. Lander Brothers’ Anchorage, Asaba
  6. Bible Site, Araya
  7. Ethiope River Source, Umuaja
  8. The Turf, Abraka
  9. Ibru Centre, Agbarha-Otor
  10. Olona Ranch and Holiday Resort, Onicha-Olona
  11. Events and Cultural Centre, Asaba and Warri
