The Ministry has both Constitutional and general functions. The Constitutional functions of the Ministry include public prosecutions. In the conduct of criminal trials, it is the responsibility of the Ministry to observe the due process of law. The Ministry also sees to the welfare of prisoners and persons awaiting trials. The Attorney General advises the Governor of the State in the exercise of his Prerogative of Mercy.
The general activities of the Ministry include the rendering of legal opinion, preparation of executive bills for introduction to the House of Assembly, Contract documentations and Conduct of Civil Litigations in respect of claims for and against government and any of its agencies. Through its department of Administrator-General and Public Trustee, the Ministry administers the Estate of Deceased. The bodies of Laws of the State are collated by the Ministry for publication into volumes so as to make for ease of reference.
In the discharge of its functions, the Ministry is guided by
(a) the philosophy that law is an engine of social integration and the harnessing for the development of the State its rich natural resources associated with its diverse ethnic peculiarities; and
(b) the need for good governance in the State founded upon the principles of just rule of Law.
