PASSENGERS WELFARE SCHEME BILL PASSED INTO LAW

A Bill for a law to provide for the establishment of Passengers Welfare Scheme and other purpose connected therewith was passed into law by the Delta State House of Assembly in its sitting of Wednesday 27th, February 2002. The bill presented by the House Committee on Works and Transport was passed into law by a motion moved by the Majority Leader Hon. Krees Njiokwuemeni and was seconded by Hon. Anderson Mekoma after its 3rd reading in the floor of the House.

When operational, the scheme shall make provision for compulsory compilation of passengers manifest and payment of welfare fees by all passengers traveling within and outside the state. The law will also make it punishable for a passenger who fails to supply his particulars to enable the transporter or his agent to prepare the manifest as provided by the law, liable on conviction to imprisonment for one month or N1,000:00 fine or both.

Earlier, the House received a petition from the people of Obiaruku town praying it to set up an Ad-hoc committee to investigate the courses that led to the Obiaruku crisis on Monday 18 Feb 2002. Granting the request, the Speaker, Hon. Basil Ganagana assured that an ad-hoc committee would be set up soon for the purpose. The House have adjourned to Tuesday 5th of March, 2002.
